The beginnings of a Winter Grid

Way back at the beginning of the pandemic, I knit a Gridlines sweater and was so in love with the pattern – I loved the way the slipped stitches and garter ridges formed a grid, and especially the way that the gridlines sloped to create beautiful lines at the shoulder, and knitting a sweater sideways was surprisingly delightful. I also find the designer (Susanne Sommer) to be a delightful person, and follow her on Instagram, so when I saw that she was designing a heavier-weight Gridlines, I knew I would be casting on for it as soon as the pattern came out.

And so I did. I had a couple of skeins of Cascade Eco+ in “Lake Chelan Heather” in my stash that I had I originally thought I’d turn into another Farmhouse cardigan, but I thought the color would look really good in this design, and so far I’m not disappointed in that choice! (I may end up needing to pick up a third skein, though…I’m not sure how generous the yarn estimates are, but I’m definitely a bit short of the number listed for my size – I’m knitting a 2c Scoopneck, with the intention of doing the cowlneck.) I’m already finished with the right side!

The only thing I didn’t love in my original Gridlines was the garter hem; it just ended up a little bit floppy and never quite sat right, and part of that might’ve been that I chose a body length that was a bit too long, but in any case, when I saw that the designer was using twisted rib for the cuffs and the cowlneck, I thought to myself: what if I did the sideways bottom hem in twisted rib instead of garter?

It took a little bit of reworking of the cast-on directions – I did a backwards-loop cast on for the ribbing before switching to the long-tail cast on for the center seam of the body; I know from experience that I can get a pretty smooth, seamless “join” if I pick up from the bottom loops of the backwards-loop cast-on and I’m hoping it will be relatively seamless at the center front and back. We’ll find out soon!
