my sweet daughter,

i want so many things for you, darling munchkin: for you to be a healthy,
happy, compassionate person, to feel comfortable in your own skin, and
to never lose your interest in learning about life, the universe, and
everything. always remember that you are so very, very loved.

love, mama.

I am a mother now. My sweet girl, Madrigal, had an incredibly dramatic entry into the world. I wrote about her birth here.

  1. oh, whitney, she’s gorgeous! what a beautiful addition to your family — and what a lovely name. (and i just read her birth story, so i also have to add that you are an absolute rockstar. wishing you a smooth and speedy recovery.)

  2. Congratulations! I just read your birth story, and I think you have such a great attitude despite the things that didn’t go as planned – focusing on your healthy little one. Thanks for sharing. Good luck with your recovery. I hope you are able to give yourself the help and time it takes to feel better.

    1. Finally catching up on email nearly 2 months later! Thank you so much! We had a lot of help from my friends in the department here, and Madrigal and I are both doing wonderfully now!

  3. Congratulations, she’s beautiful! Thank you for sharing her and your birth story, and more congratulations in how you managed the situation, Madrigal has a brave mama. Good luck with your healing.

  4. I am so happy for you and Andrew! Maddy is beautiful, and the note you wrote to her is one of the most lovely notes I’ve ever read. Well done, rock star.

    1. (Finally catching up on 2-month-old email!)

Thank you so much! I’m hoping to find the time (eventually…) to embroider that little note on something for her.

Thank you so much for this sweet comment! Thankfully, I can carry Maddy around all day now, and have almost forgotten how bad it was those early weeks when I couldn’t.

Thank you so much Mai! I’m so excited that we had a girl, because I’ve wanted to use this name for a long time :)

    1. (I’m finally catching up on replying to comments now, almost 2 months later!). Thank you so much! I’ve wanted to use the name “Madrigal” since I was a teenager – we just got lucky that we had a girl and I could!

  6. Congratulations! Your daughter is absolutely beautiful. I just read the birth story. I didn’t have the birth experience I’d hoped for either and I don’t know anyone who did, but you have the right attitude. Life does not always go according to plan, but we are blessed with precious children just the same! Hang in there with your recovery. You will get there! This holiday season will be extra special now that you have Madrigal. All the best to you and your family!

Thank you so much for your comment! This holiday season was pretty much one giant blur, but I’m so excited about what’s in store for us in 2012. I hope your new year is off to a great start, too!

Thank you, Peter! It was indeed exciting (and terrifying, too, but I suppose terror is a form of excitement!). I was so thrilled that she turned out to be a girl, because I’ve been wanting to use the name “Madrigal” for a long time. Some people get that it’s musical, other people just think it’s pretty…and a few people just give me a weird, confused look when I say her name, so I tell them they can call her “Maddy” :)
